GREENVILLE – The Department of Transportation has awarded a $24.3 million contract to construct a flyover bridge from U.S. 70 East to the Slocum Gate at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

The project awarded to S.T. Wooten Corporation of Wilson is intended to reduce congestion and accidents, and improve access to the military base.

Additional work will include repaving, drainage and signals along U.S. 70 and a reconfiguration and repairs of the road in and out of the Tucker Creek and MacDonald Boulevard areas.

Lane closures will be needed but no detours are proposed at this time.

Repaving a road provides better traction and ride quality for drivers, which is especially important during rainy and snowy weather. Drainage work removes water from the road surface and reduces the chances of ponding. Signal work and intersection improvements will reduce the amount of time traffic is stopped at a signal.

Work on this project is scheduled to begin as soon as soon as July 31 and is scheduled to be completed in March 2020.
