January 28, 2016

David Heath, Chair of the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee, presents a “Chamber Check” to Hank Hingley, representing the Veterans Student Success Center at Carteret Community College. Allies for Cherry Point's Tomorrow.

The Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee is proud to announce the donation of $500 to support the new Veterans Student Success Center (VSSC) at Carteret Community College, which is located inside the Donald W. Bryant Student Center.

The mission of the VSSC is to arm active duty military, Veterans and dependents with the resources and support necessary to achieve their educational goals.

Matching the MAC’s donation was Bob Upchurch of Bob Upchurch Appraisals, a longtime member of the MAC.

“Thoughtful donations, like the ones from the Military Affairs Committee and Bob Upchurch, help us provide the support our students need to succeed,” said Brenda Reash, Carteret Community College Foundation Director.

The VSSC opened on Memorial Day of 2015. It includes a lounge with comfortable seating, computers, printers, coffee, a refrigerator, a television and a nice view of the water, veterans can walk next door to a resource center. There they will find an information hub for educational benefits, academic advising, and learning resources.

With Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point nearby and two Coast Guard stations in Carteret County, there is a large Veterans population with more than 200 students on CCC’s campus using military benefits to further their education.
